Welcome back everyone, I hope you had a wonderful break. This term Cedar class will be learning about the great fire of London in topic. We will be doing a variety of reading, writing and artwork to understand what happened during this historical event. In science, we are studying a topic called Our Living Earth. The children will learn about life cycles of various animals, eating healthily and the importance of exercising and hygiene. Our PE session is still on Monday afternoons, and this term we are improving our gymnastic skills, so please make sure your child has their PE kit in school all week. A gentle reminder also that earrings must be taken out by the children themselves or left out for the PE session on Monday, as they are not able to do PE with them in. Please continue to listen to your child read each night as this has a positive impact on all of their learning. Homework is given out on Fridays and due back in on the following Thursday. Any homework set will usually be a continuation of, further developing of, skills, learnt in class, so it is important that your child completes this in order to consolidate their learning.
This term in Cedar Class we have been reading lots of imaginative books to help us with our writing. The children have planned, written and acted out their own version of a story that they enjoyed. In science this term, we have been learning about different materials and the children have carried out practical investigations. They have made predictions and observations, and discussed their findings with their peers. We have PE every Monday, so can children make sure they have their PE kits in school. Also, please continue to listen to your children read every night as this has a positive impact on everything they do in school. Homework is given out on Fridays and should be completed by the children and handed back in on the following Thursday.
Cedar have had a busy week this week. We have had a visit from an Author and the children enjoyed the workshop that he did. We also had a wonderful day at Joss Bay, fun was had by all…
Cedar class are very excited about their upcoming trip to Bodium Castle. This visit will support their topic work on castles. As part of the day the children will have an opportunity to dress up in a suit of armour! The children have been doing the Small Steps Road Safety Course. Their last session is on the 22nd May. All the children who have completed the six week course will receive a reward! Cedar have worked hard on their gymnastic skills, they’ve learnt how to put together a sequence including balances, rolls and travelling. They are looking forward to using the wall bars next week. Please make sure your child has a suitable PE kit in school at all times. Next term we will be working outside so all children will also need a pair of trainers or plimsolls.
This term Cedar Class will be embarking on an exciting project Our Amazing World. They will be looking at different countries around the world, learning about intrepid explorers and all about growing wonderful things in our class garden. Our author this term is Nick Butterworth who wrote the lovely ‘Percy the Park Keeper’ books. Our artist is Henri Rousseau and our art will be based on his work but will also focus on earth art. We are working so hard on our maths and making great progress – the children will be learning all about numbers and shape. All the children will be engaging with exciting writing and reading projects – they’re doing well!
We will be going on a trip to a forest school this term a letter will follow shortly. Homework will be given out on a Friday. Please ensure books are back by Wednesday. I look forward to seeing you all at the parents’ meetings.
Cedar class have been super stars rehearsing the Christmas play and it is looking great! Well done to all those children who have learnt their lines and our brilliant narrators.
In maths we have been learning about subtracting a one-digit number from a two-digit number. In English we are currently writing instructions on how to make a snowman.

In English we have enjoyed reading the story of Leon and the Place Between and have made posters, drawn detailed pictures and acted out the story. We also wrote thank you letters to the magician because we enjoyed his show so much. In maths we are learning about place value for numbers up to 100. In history we are learning about magic and toys from past and present and we are eagerly looking forward to our trip to the toy museum in October. PE is on a Tuesday so please make sure your child brings in the correct PE kit and plimsolls or trainers which fit.
In maths week we have had fun problem solving, following a maths trail and competing in a newspaper challenge to make a structure big enough to sit in. In English we have been looking at pirate stories and have begun to write our own.
Over the next few weeks in English we will be looking at pirates. We will be diary writing, writing messages in bottles and writing facts about famous pirates. In maths we are problem solving maths through investigations and reasoning. Please make sure your child has an outdoor PE kit including plimsolls or trainers for PE lessons.
Cedar class worked really hard in their SATs, very well done to them all. We look forward to sports day and will be practising some of the activities in their PE lessons.
In science we have been learning about habitats and seasonal change and on the 12th June we will be visiting the Environmental Centre at Horton Kirby. Whilst there they will be learning about a range of animals and plants and use electronic resources to enhance activities. This week the children have been using the ipads for Times Tables Rock Stars, improving their times tables skills.
Cedar class are continuing with Small Steps – teaching about road safety. In science we are learning about Habitats and Seasonal Change and are hoping to go on a trip later in the term to Horton Kirby Environmental Centre. In maths we are continuing with fractions – finding 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 3/4 and 1/5. In English we are currently reading Diary of a Killer Cat by Anne Fine.
Cedar class are learning about shape and fractions in maths. In English we are reading and understanding the words which use – ness, - ful, - ment, - less and – ly,
e.g. kind – kindness.
Cedar class have been reading the story of Cinderella and looking at how speech marks are used.
In maths we are using picture grams to record information.
It is very important that the children learn their spellings and do their homework because this will help them in school. We have begun the Rock Stars Timetables which are great fun. Please log in and have a look at home if you can.
We are learning about the Islamic religion this term. In English we are Learning about information texts and using non-fiction books. In Maths we are learning our times tables and money.
A lot of the children are coming in without a PE kit.
PE is on a Tuesday and children need a plain white Tee shirt (or one with the school logo on) and blue or black shorts.
We are rehearsing our Christmas play and thank you for helping the children learn their lines and songs.
Please make sure that your child reads for 10 minutes every evening.
Our Christmas play will be Follow the Star. Please can you help the children learn their lines and songs. We have been working very hard this week on writing instructions.
This term Cedar class will be learning about the history of flight and how the Wright Brothers changed the way people travelled. We will also be looking at Google Earth to recognise familiar buildings.
We still have a few children who do not have a PE kit. Please make sure that you have one for Tuesday. This week we have been making bridges for a Gingerbread Man to cross the river and paper bag puppets as part of DT/Art Week.
Our author for the term is Ian Whybrow who writes the Harry and the Dinosaur books which the children have enjoyed reading.
Please remember that PE is on a Tuesday and all children need a PE kit.
